Installations: Cherry Blossoms & Dogwoods

The cherry blossoms (sakura) and dogwood blossoms are part of an ongoing body of work that celebrates the exchange and friendship between the US and Japan over the past century.

In 1912, over 3,000 blossoming cherry trees were gifted to Washington, DC by the Mayor of Tokyo as a symbol of goodwill and friendship. In return, the US sent flowering dogwoods to Japan. This exchange has continued over the past century, with both new and replacement trees being exchanged, in a celebration of this bilateral relationship and the beauty found in these ephemeral blossoms.

Created initially in advance of the Centennial Celebration of the Gift of Trees, these hand-formed porcelain blossoms continue to instill the magic and beauty of spring wherever they are installed.
